My work is inspired by man-made objects, industrial and technological heritage. I am interested in objects that tell a story. For example, these could be early computers that were at the cutting edge of technology. Or more everyday objects such as scissors – these interest me as they are one basic design with a multitude of uses.

Working as an intaglio printmaker (using techniques such as Etching, Collagraph and Carborundum printing), I have often been frustrated by the fact that I work hard to create interesting surfaces, marks and embossing in my prints, only for the image to be flattened when put behind glass and framed for display. So I saw this exhibition as an opportunity to experiment with alternative ways to display my prints, for example mounting them onto panels. Removing the frame barrier, I think, gives the viewer a richer experience of viewing the work.

The images shown here illustrate areas of interest for me. ‘Layers of time’ was inspired by ideas of decay and erosion. ‘Collaborate with my uncle’ celebrates the skills of my uncle who was a fine calligrapher. My creative collaboration with him has been to make the alphabet into an object to be viewed and enjoyed. ‘Celebrating the everyday’ – the sewing machine, one machine that can provide a livelihood, pleasure and an opportunity for creativity.
